The Battleship USS Iowa was built in 1940 and served in the U.S. navy for more than 50 years. It’s earned the name “World’s Greatest Naval Ship” and has hosted more U.S. presidents than any other battleship. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and George H.W. Bush have all been hosted on the battleship. The USS Iowa carried F.D.R. overseas to attend a very important meeting in Algeria during WWII. A bathtub and elevator were added to ship for his trip and remain there today. The ship has been involved in numerous battles, mainly in the Pacific theater.

After finally being decommissioned in 1990, the ship was retained on the Naval Vessel Register to comply with federal laws. In 2011, the USS Iowa was donated to the Pacific battleship Center and was moved to the Port of Los Angeles in 2012 where it resides today. The battleship is now a museum and memorial open to the public.

Iowa is over 800 feet long and is capable of moving at speeds up to 33 knots or 38 miles per hour. She holds an impressive amount of weaponry including anti-aircraft guns, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and Harpoon Anti-Ship missiles.

The USS Iowa is open to the public every day except for Christmas and Thanksgiving. For most of the year it is open between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm but from June 15 through September 2 it opens at 9:00 am. Please note that they stop selling tickets at 4:00 pm every day. General admission tickets are between $10 and $18 depending on your age. You can also buy tickets in a package deal to visit other ships in the area.

There are a variety of different tours available depending on your interests. Any military enthusiast will love to see this prestigious and legendary battleship.
