The name of the Nethercutt Museum gives no clue to the treasure of automotive vehicles it holds! Car enthusiasts and those looking for a unique museum will get a thrill out of this fascinating attraction in Sylmar, California, USA.

At the Nethercutt Museum there is are over 130 automobiles, each impeccably preserved and each car has its own story. The first thing visitors outside the museum see is a restored 1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson steam locomotive and a 1912 Pullman Private Car custom built in Chicago for the eldest daughter of Santa Anita Race Track founder E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin.

Inside, neatly lined up are cars in several categories:

The Antique Era cars (1890-1915) sparked the imaginations of automobile developers who were just beginning to test the boundaries of these "horseless carriages". The artisans and craftsmen took risks and borrowed characteristics from other familiar modes of transport like wagons. The shiny brass fixtures and upholstered seats seem almost to be out of turn of the century sitting rooms. The 1913 Mercedes model 3795 Double Phaeton-Torpedo is an example from this period.

Cars like the 1923 Voisin, model C-5, Sporting Victoria is one of the vehicles from the Vintage Era (1916-1924) when automobile manufacturers were moving away from the embellishments of what we now call antique cars and in the direction of simple functionality. These Vintage cars still have the antique silhouette but with fewer "frills" and more practical touches like cigar lighters and visors.

The cars from the Classic Era (1925-1948) flaunt their style and elegance and came to represent an important statues symbol. Cars like the 1931 Bugatti-Type 51, Coupe could cost $2,000 to $20,000 when the average US annual salary in 1940 was $956.

The Post-War Era cars (1945-1970) focused on speed, engine power, sleek designs, technology and providing cars for a wider auto market. The sexy 1967 Ferrari-365 is an example of this category on display at the Nethercutt Museum.

Don't be confused between the Nethercutt Museum at 15151 Bledsoe Street, Sylmar, Los Angeles, California and the Nethercutt Collection across the street at 15200 Bledsoe Street. The museum holds the cars described above and can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday on a self-guided tour. The Nethercutt Collection also holds automobiles in addition to antique furniture, clocks and mechanical musical instruments. However the Collection can only be viewed as part of a pre-booked 2-hour guided tour on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10am and 1:30pm. The good news is that both the Nethercutt Museum and Collection have free admission!
