The Bronx City Zoo, located in the Bronx Park, first opened its door for the public in 1899, presenting 843 animals in 22 exhibits. The Zoo was called the Bronx Zoological Park and the Bronx Zoological Gardens, back then.

These days, The Bronx Zoo covers four zoos and an aquarium on 265 acres of land, and is home to approximately 4000 animals presenting about 650 species from all over the world. Even the most enthusiastic visitors will find it impossible to complete a tour of the Zoo in a single day, as there are some many exhibits to see on such a huge area.

The Bronx Zoo holds both indoor and outdoor exhibits.

Outdoor exhibits present African Plains and Asian region. While walking through Africa outdoor exhibit, you will be able to see lions, zebras, gazelles, African Wild dogs in their natural environment. Giraffes leisurely walk nearby.

African Plain exhibit - includes Congo Gorilla Forrest covering 6.5 acre jungle, which is home to approximately 20 gorillas. The jungle is also living place of mandrills, guenon, marmosets, okapis as well as colobus monkeys.

Tiger Licking its chopsAsian outdoor exhibit - portrays Asian forests, wild plains, mud lands and riversides on a 40 acre land. While riding through the Asian exhibit, visitors will get a peak of tigers, rhinos, elephants and Przewalski horses in their natural habitat.

Zoo's indoor exhibits include Jungle World, Butterfly Garden, The Madagascar Exhibit and the World of Birds.

The Jungle World is home to 800 jungle animal species like tapirs, gibbons, leopards and otters.

You can also see fire-bellied toads and scorpions, and on a pond with a waterfall you will be able to get a glimpse of gourami, iridescent sharks, and Fly River turtles.

While walking through Butterfly Garden you will be able to observe butterflies up close, and when you enter The Madagascar exhibit, which opened the door in 2008, you will see recreation of wildlife from the island of Madagascar: lemurs, crocodiles, fossas.

Bronx Zoo BirdsIn the World of Birds, indoor exhibit open the entire year, you can see curassows, blue-bellied rollers, Cuban Amazons, and many other bird species.

Bronx Zoo is important not only for his wonderful outdoor and indoor exhibits, but also for its efforts to help threatened animal species. For example, in the 2010, the Zoo has started a colony of Kihansi Spray Toads, which have disappeared in their native Tanzanian environment.
