Some wonderful things to do in Central Park
If you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying New York’s Central Park you’re in for a real treat. Yes it’s a great place to take a walk or go for a jog but there are many other wonderful, interesting and fun things you can do that many people, even New Yorkers, don’t know about. The fact is, Central Park has over 800 acres of attractions that cover a wide variety of interests. If you have the opportunity, don’t miss going there for a day of fun.

One of the best times of year to see Central Park is in the spring but, if you like to walk, it can be exhilarating year-round. There are walking paths throughout the park and even walking tours that you can take if you’re not keen on exploring on your own.

Every summer for more than 50 years now there’s Shakespeare in the Park. If you’re a fan of the Bard you can see one of his many plays for free (there are usually 2 per season) but get there early because even though it’s free it’s also popular and tickets are limited.

In the middle of the park is the Central Park Carousel which, if you have kids or are a kid at heart, is an awful lot of fun. It features the largest hand painted and hand carved carousel figures in the world and is open all year round (although at varying hours).

Rowing a boat around the lake in Central Park is a lot of fun and you can do that from Loeb Boathouse. The season is April 15 through Oct 31. If you’re not keen on rowing Gondola rides are also available but are a little more expensive and should be reserved in advance.

Central ParkEvery year there are various Concerts put on in Central Park by the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic orchestra and others. Paul Simon has given a number of free concerts over the years so check in advance to see if he or another star is in town while you’re there.

There’s also:

    • Birding
    • Carriage Rides
    • Pedicabs
    • Various Sports depending on the season
    • Rock climbing
    • Ice Skating
    • Playgrounds for the kids
    • The Swedish Marionette theatre

Finally there’s the all-time favorite Central Park Zoo that is open year-round and features among other things a Polar Bear pool and an indoor rainforest.

So as you can see Central Park is chock full of fabulous things to do and see at any time of year. Enjoy yourself while you’re in the Big Apple and take some time to see one of America’s finest city parks.
