The Statue of Liberty which stands tall at an island of the shores of New York City is a beacon of hope, enlightenment and of course liberty. It is one of the most favorite tourist destinations in the world and certainly among the top 10 in New York. While it doesn’t feature as one of the wonders of the world, the Statue of Liberty has quite an interesting history to boast off.

On the centennial year of American independence, the Statue of Liberty was gifted to the US by the French Government. For a long time, it has been one of the iconic symbols of America, freedom and the people of the US. The copper framed, steel structure is 151 feet high and placed on a pedestal that itself is 154 feet high. The total height of the Statue of Liberty is thus 305 feet and it is placed on an island which later was named as Liberty Island.

Statue of Liberty is one of the most visited places in New York. Tourists as well as local residents have two primary ways of getting to the island. You can either take a ferry ride from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan or from the Liberty State Park at Jersey City in New Jersey. Owing to the excessive interest in the site and the Statue of Liberty tours, the ferry rides are expensive and also clogged with tourists almost every day throughout the year. The Battery Park venue is more oft used by tourists due to its proximity to other popular destinations in New York and hence is also encountered with huge queues. The Liberty State Park at Jersey City is a relatively much easier route to take. Although it would cost the same for a ferry ride, the shorter queues would be ideal for tourists who do not have all day.

The Liberty Island is a restricted zone and everyone traveling to and from the site would be subjected to multiple security checks. There are numerous tours of the Statue of Liberty including visiting the crown by climbing the more than 300 steps on stairs. Reserving the entire arrangement and booking all tickets in advance is recommendable and almost mandatory for people visiting from outside New York or from foreign shores.

The Statue of Liberty is ideal for adults as well as kids with special ranger tours available for those aged 7 to 12.
